CONCEPT STATEMENT
The project delves into my multicultural identity and religious conflict as a Black South African raised in a post-colonial society. Colonialism led to migration and religious and cultural conflict, that developed into a complex tapestry of identities. With indigenous fashion as a visual language, I express this conflict by applying an expressive and performative element to convey my journey. The project reflects the ongoing battle and challenges I face and showcases my unique story and self-discovery.
Title project is “nkosi Masondo” 2024 (A Sunday King) is a photographic series that explores my conflicted relationship between my religion and culture. The project's narrative derives from the religious and cultural conflict experienced growing up in the church. The title stems from my upbringing in a diverse home and navigating my hybrid identity. Growing up, my mother taught me to celebrate who I am and gave me lessons that helped me understand my diversity. Many stories were taught, but history lessons on my identity were the main subjects. I grew to understand how apartheid and colonialism led to a complex cultural tapestry. My mom taught me to wear my identity with pride and not shy away from my traditions and roots.
