INKOSI MASONDO I

Inkosi Masondo (A Sunday King) began as the body of work to experiment on what, me being part of the project will look like. During 08 August 2024, in the photography studio on campus. I investigated what the conflicting identity looks like and how can I represent that in a photograph. But I had asked myself how I can represent the first process of the concept and meet targets about my personal narrative. The photographs looked consist of low lighting, spotlight and the intensive emotions. The clash comes between my culture and religion. This is due to Black South African communities forced to Western culture from colonisation, with long-standing ideologies and concepts. But ask me why we do not wear our traditions and culture with pride with so much richness in our identities.

In series I, investigates the internal struggle that I endure being pulled between these two worlds. In this dark space, I feel as if no one wants to hear me out, no one wants to answer me why as Black South African’s do not raise the conversation of who are we exactly.

The indigenous attire represents my inherited tradition and being born in a multicultural home. The bible showcases the religion I grew under, being Christianity and raised under my church values (Power House Bible Church) The performative element express how I feel in this conflict, my anger, my contempt, my submission and confusion as this were the day to day struggles I had to endure in attempt to understand who I am and why doesn’t my community love the two faces (culture and religion)
